Individuals Served: Intellectual disabilities, developmental disabilities, mental health, hospice
Entry Level Requirements: Applicants should be solid in their musical skills and be prepared to focus on
clinical skill development in this internship. Applicants should be able to sight read from a lead sheet on, at
minimum, piano and guitar, and be able to demonstrate 3 different strumming patterns, and be able to sing in
key and project over their instrument. A portion of the interview process is devoted to exploring musical
flexibility and ability.

Internship Experience: Interns will be paired with a Supervisor and will have the opportunity to observe,
co-lead and take over the treatment process with a selected caseload. The internship is structured with a
developmental mindset of learning for each individual intern. Interns will be expected to work a 40 hour week,
Mon-Fri with days containing various hours between 9a-6:30pm with both in clinic (primary) and in home/facility
locations. Interns are expected to provide their own computer for documentation purposes and will be provided
with an intern email address. They are able to work from Mainstay’s office location when not seeing clients in
home. Primary work with clients is 1:1, although interns will have a group camp experience and optional work
in a mental health inpatient unit. Interns will be directly supervised during 100% of their 1:1 client interactions
by a MT-BC, and will conduct an internship project, complete article and book chapter reviews, and will attend
both client and company team meetings. Interns will be encouraged to keep firm work hours and will have
non-directed self care time worked into their weekly schedules.

Professional Staff Interactions: Mainstay has a large team of music therapists with whom interns will have
consistent interaction. Interns will learn to work with clients in conjunction with recreational therapists, behavior
therapists, ABA techs and other therapists such as occupational, speech and physical therapists.

On-site Training/Educational Programs: Mainstay therapists work with music therapy practicum students.
Mainstay occasionally holds in-services and opportunities for learning about other therapy modalities (speech,
physical, occupational, behavioral, art, movement, etc) and techniques as well as music therapy specific
workshops and presentations. Interns will have the opportunity to attend GLR, State and National conferences.

Administrative Requirements: Interns will need to show evidence of student liability insurance policy, a
negative TB test result and have local law enforcement checks on file prior to the start of their internship and
will be responsible for funding these. Music therapy interns are expected to provide their own room and board
as well as drive to various sites, mileage reimbursement is not provided. There are several affordable living
options in the Fort Wayne area. A housing and food stipend of $1500 is offered. It is paid $750 at the end of
month 2 and month 4. Reliable form of transportation is required for this internship. Students should check with
their university to see if they are covered through the program’s liability insurance during this time. No legal
affiliation agreement is required for this setting.
